Let’s start with the very first, most basic thing: we do not want your money.
That’s an unusual statement for a political movement, but there are two very good reasons why we don’t want your money right now:
Once the Senator announces her candidacy, of course, the game changes a lot – candidates need money, and lots of it. But for the time being, that time is at least two years in the future. If you wish to donate to the Senator’s 2006 re-election campaign, we would certainly not discourage this, and when this becomes possible, we will try to let readers know how to do so.
So if we don’t want money, what do we want?
We want you.
We want your enthusiasm, your ideas, your creativity, your time, and all the gifts that “we the people” bring to political discourse. Our goal for the next several months is to build a strong community of people who support Senator Snowe’s views and candidacy, and who will work together to build a movement to support the Senator’s candidacy. We will respond to all suggestions from that community about how best to organize and develop the campaign and its communications. This campaign is inevitably a work in progress; we aim to provide a community, a focal point for volunteers, a point of communication and a base of resources.
Elsewhere on this site, we have described our views on how to start this campaign, but the beauty of this project is that such a list is a beginning, not an end; it is an invitation to discussion, not a set-in-stone game plan. If you want to write to Sen. Snowe encouraging her candidacy – please do. If you want to write to newspapers in support of either Sen. Snowe’s candidacy or rebuffing efforts by players such as the Club for Growth to brand her a RINO – please do. But to make the maximum impact, there’s a couple of things you should do first.
If you have read through this website and are considering joining us in calling for Senator Snowe’s candidacy, here is a four-step plan for what should do next.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that this campaign belongs to you, not to us. We have taken the first step by creating this site as a lightning rod for supporters of Sen. Snowe – so we’ve started the engine, and now we’re handing you the keys. We intend to build a community of supporters here, and the maintainers of this site will do everything possible and appropriate to facilitate this goal. To this end, we are building tools and a volunteer framework – but without volunteers, all this is just a good idea in fancy packaging. What we need is you. The power is in yor hands to make the campaign a success.
One last “how you can help” point: if you are reading this and find, by some happy chance, that you are currently the senior U.S. Senator from Maine, there is one thing that you in particular can do that no other reader can – and for the record, we hope to pursuade you in the next two years that you should.
